to Snohomish
Snohomish, Washington is a city in Snohomish County. The population was 8,494 at the 2000 census. The city is known for its antique shops. Snohomish bills itself as the "antique capital of the Northwest" and First Street lives up to this claim. The town of Snohomish prides itself for its historical downtown feel. Many homes throughout the town are dubbed as historical and bear a plaque with the year it was built and the family that originally occupied it. Once every year, the town gives tours of the said houses to those who are interested.
Harvey Airfield is located right outside the heart of Snohomish. There one can take flying lessons, go skydiving, or take a hot air balloon ride. In the summer, one can see many parachutes floating in the sky.
Schools
Snohomish is served by the Snohomish School District. Private schools in Snohomish include Peaceful Glen Christian School and Zion Lutheran School.
The town takes great pride in the sponsorship of its local high school. Residents frequently fill the stands in order to support the high school's sports teams. Another sure sign of Snohomish pride is the annual "serpentine". Serpentine is a parade held before homecoming in which every high school student joins to walk down the streets of Snohomish. The students are dressed in the high school colors of red and white. Many students are quite enthusiastic about this parade, as are the residents of the town. Residents line the streets with cameras and happy faces to view this joyful event.
History
Snohomish was founded in 1860 by E.C. Ferguson and E.F. Cady. It was originally known as Cadyville, and changed its name to Snohomish City in 1871. The name Snohomish is taken from the name of the dominant local Native American tribe "sdoh-doh-hohbsh" which has a meaning that is widely disputed. Snohomish was officially incorporated on November 24, 1883.
